On 27th February 2007, the Institute of
Advanced Technology (IAT) facilitated a free one day Career Seminar for high
school teachers involved in student career guidance as part of its CSR
activities for 2010.
The seminar took place at the IAT Thika Road Campus,
Kasarani, adjacent to Kenya Tents near Roysambu Roundabout from 8.30 AM to
04.00 PM.
Participants were taken through:
· Introduction
to career counseling,
· Sources
of Career Information,
· Factors
to consider when choosing a career,
· Factors
to consider when choosing a tertiary institution,
· Career
opportunities in the ICT industry,
· Career
opportunities in the Business industry,
· IAT
CSR activities – Ufunguo Scholarships,
· IAT
train the trainer course - MCT.
It was also a forum where teachers shared, brainstormed
and helped solved problems that they encounter in the course of their work as
career counselors.
IAT facilitated the seminar due to the increase in
secondary graduates without ample career information. Each year, IAT receives
more than 14,000 career enquiries. The majority of these are fresh high school
leavers in career choices dilemma as they try to decide on the courses to
pursue at college and university level that would best prepare them for a life
long career. Many of them lack basic/background information on career
opportunities and options after high school. As such, they are often not
empowered to make appropriate career choices.
Lack of proper career guidance could lead to Wrong career
choices, frustrated, disillusioned and unfulfilled careers, lack of drive and
motivation to excel in studies and also at work and un-preparedness for entry
into the world of work.
Clear guidance on careers and the link between school and
the world of work is a vital ingredient for successful and fulfilling careers.
During the seminar, teachers identified Lack of
Information on different Careers as the biggest challenge in their day to day
program.
In the end, IAT undertook to assist schools in developing
their career departments by;
· Facilitating
Career Counseling sessions in schools so as to take information on different
careers to students,
· Inviting
students to IAT for academic trips and giving them an opportunity to sample its excellent and latest state of the art ICT and Business facilities,
· Assist
needy students through Ufunguo Scholarships so that they can actualize a career in
ICT
All participants received training materials and
certificates of participation.
